Good Eatin'

Photobucket"
I'd been hungering for a pot of beans for a while and after reading Amy @ Angry Chicken's post
about beans, I decided to do a little online research of fresh-dried beans. Rancho Gordo was enticing, but since I didn't find a large selection there, I kept looking and found Purcell Mountain Farms in Idaho. They had a much bigger selection of beans and other goodies, and much more valuable (for me, anyway) information on the beans.
I chose Anasazi and Adzuki beans because of ease of digestibility, and was intrigued by the idea of cooking Whole Giant White Corn from dried. I've never even heard of anything but frozen or fresh or canned (ugh) corn and think that this will make for an interesting experiment. I've never been a big corn eater, myself, other than grits (yes, I grew up on the stuff) but hubby is definitely a corn lover and who knows, this may just make me a convert!
Purcell Mountain Farms claims that all their beans will sprout, which I guess I'd never even thought of (I mean the idea that "dried" anything should sprout, so that tells me that they must be pretty fresh, right? At least in comparison to the dried beans that sit on the supermarket shelves for months or years. I also ordered a pound of Pine Nuts (great for making pesto) and Brown Chipotle Chile Powder. I ordered on Thursday, and they were at the Post Office on Monday! I made my first batch of beans with 1/2 lb of the Anasazis. We enjoyed them so much (I added a bit of ham for the worlds greatest carnivore) that, along with brown rice, I cooked the second 1/2 pound the next afternoon.
Although on Thursday morning we were jousting about who would get the remainder of the pot-o-beans, looks like I win, cuz here it is Saturday, and he's still not eating much. The Mister had surgery on Thursday afternoon to repair damage he did to his arm while weightlifting (arumph). Yep, the surgery was more than just a little uncomfortable and he's been in a bit of misery ever since. He'd planned on being back at work by next Tuesday but, from the looks of him today, I'll be surprised, truly I will. The "block" they'd administered on his arm before surgery did not work and they ended up giving morphine during surgery, and multiple pain-killers afterward. Looks like this may take a little longer than he thought for him to feel better. Here's his arm after 48 hours and removing the dressings. Don't look if you are at all sensitive about this sort of thing.
